Penna’s sculptures are created with a physicality that demonstrates his knowledge and experience of material properties. He uses a rich palette of materials to create work that is playful, experimental, inventive and not inhibited by any formal language. His language of transforming areas, inanimate objects and spaces into something more intriguing, mysterious and unexpected is inherent to the 17 years he has spent engineering within architecture. The materials along with other elements formulate a dialogue within the works overall concept. Three dimensional forms exist in a spatial dynamic and require human interaction; Ian’s sculptures go one step further challenging the viewer to accept materials in a new unrelated context. There is irony, intrigue and an underlining concern behind his work that is about engaging the viewer and encouraging them to question what they see with a sense of curiosity; provoking all the senses to find clues about the works narrative.
