FIRST@108 is an award designed to offer Sculptors an opportunity to extend their practice into competing for public art commissions. The RBS unveiled the winning work in the Sculpture Forecourt and celebrated Jenske Dijkhuis’ achievement as the recipient of the FIRST@108 Public Art Award 2010. 'From Private Space to Public Realm', the accompanying exhibition sets Dijkhuis’ winning work in the context of her existing concerns and current practice.
'The way people claim and use spaces intrigues me. By creating a border, the space is defined and given a name and purpose. Both in the private and the public realm these borders define our spatial experience. I try to cross boundaries by building objects and installations that form a physical transition between one place and another. Doors, walls, fences or just lines on a map are physical examples of the ways to define the border between inside and outside, land versus water, city versus countryside, public versus private, yours versus mine. Through my work I try to make people more conscious of the space they move through and how they interact with it.'
