The Rumble, Explored aspects of morphology

2-27 March 2001

Investigating the idea that the brain's capacity for projecting anthropomorphic images into clay, rock, wood etc. is the essence of our sculptural instincts. Particular emphasis was given to objects which express relationships between sine-waves, circles, spirals, spheres, toroidal and helical forms in ways which suggest and explore aspects of aesthetic, architectural practice, biological research and chemical modelling

Edward Smith, RA Bronzecasting Award Winner

3-21 April 2001

Edward Smith 3rd year student the Royal Academy School, was the recipient of the RBS Bronze Casting Fellowship Award 2000.

"Edward is a true sculptor and natural object maker, combining mixed materials on a huge scale with apparent ease. They included; paper, steel and concrete. It will be interesting to see how he translates his very large ideas into bronze on a much more modest scale"
Derek Morris, President of the RBS

Local(e): Site and Sound

2-31 May 2001

Central to our relationship with the city in which we live or work are the sites and sounds unique to the personality and atmosphere of the area. SW7 is rich in arts institutions, fine monuments and auction houses but what of the objects and sounds created by the area and its people themselves? The exhibition LOCAL(e) SITE AND SOUND was born out of the desire to foster a new relationship between the urban landscape of SW7 and its residents, visitors and workforce by drawing attention to its indigenous sonic qualities.

Paul Cox, RA Bronzecasting Award Winner

5-23 June 2001

Paul Cox: Recent graduate of the Royal Academy School, Paul Cox
was the recipient of the RBS Bronze Casting Fellowship Award 1999.

"When the panel visited Paul's exhibition at the RA they were captivated by his portfolio of photographs of very small sculptures which were just runs for his later large works. They lent themselves so perfectly to being converted into bronze that he was a natural choice for the RBS Bronze Casting Fellowship"
Derek Morris, President of the RBS

Annual Exhibition 2001

5 July - 18 August 2001
Curated by Carole Hodgson

Selected with the help of arts critic, Mary Rose Beaumont and curated by Carole Hodgson, works by 35 sculptors representing a huge variety of style and media were exhibited, including 'The Watcher' by Phillip King OBE, a large scale work which was situated in the RBS Sculpture Courtyard overlooking Old Brompton Road until 2002.

The selected 35 sculptors represented the diverse approach to making that the Society promotes, from figuration, portraiture and abstraction through to the conceptual and ephemeral. Humour was contrasted with stark reality, construction with the tactile to enliven the senses for three dimensional ideas, techniques and concepts.

RBS Gallery, Off Site

4 - 26 October 2001

The RBS Gallery has joined in partnership with the Stanley Picker Gallery (SPG) at Kingston University for their 2001 Picker Fellowship exhibition featuring Richard Trupp.

Following the success of his installation, Fixing Blocks at the RBS Gallery in June 2000, and recent nomination for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize, Richard installs a site specific work at SPG, echoes of which are visible at the RBS Gallery. Corresponding works in the two galleries form an imagined, underground connection, 'bolting' the two spaces together for the duration of the show
